FINAL REFLECTION
What have I learnt in this module?
This module gave me a new understanding of design. I always knew that there were rules and reasons behind each design, but I had never learned them in a structured way. Through this module, I not only gained knowledge about design principles but also developed the ability to analyse and improve a design. The most important thing I learned is to look at design from different perspectives and think in different ways to understand it better.
What did I enjoy the most?
Overall, I enjoyed most parts of this module, including learning basic design principles, analysing design I was interested in, and trying to improve it. What I enjoyed the most was having the freedom to express my understanding and propose changes to a design. I especially liked Task 3 because I could apply everything I had learned in the previous tasks. It was satisfying to create a final piece that I liked.
What did I not enjoy the most?
I would say Task 3 as well. Although I felt a bit confused and overwhelmed during Task 1, the challenge was to balance my personal liking for certain artworks with the belief that they could be improved. I selected many artworks because I liked them as they were, even if they didn’t fully follow design principles, changing them might have taken away their original charm. At the same time, I also felt that some could be pushed further to be even better, finding that balance was difficult.
However, Task 3 was the most challenging for me. The ideation stage was fun, but developing and refining my design was not easy. I often felt lost and unsure of how to improve my work. Luckily, after consulting with Mr Fauzi, his advice was clear and helpful. Even though I still think there’s room for improvement, I am quite satisfied with my final result.
What have I learnt about myself through this module?
Before this module, I preferred to rely on my own judgment rather than follow fixed rules when designing. I thought following rules too strictly would make the process boring. But now, I realise that our intuition is actually shaped by our observations of good designs. In a way, we apply design principles without even knowing it.
Through this module, I also noticed that I tend to be a bit stubborn about my original ideas. I used to stick to my initial sketches without realising that design is an active process—we always have the right to change our minds. Now, I find it more interesting to explore different possibilities, as the results can be unpredictable.
What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
One interesting change is that I have started to think more critically about design in my daily life. For example, when I see a poster or any design-related work, I naturally analyse the principles used rather than just appreciating it visually. This habit has been both fun and insightful.
However, one thing that hasn’t changed is my design approach. Even though I have learned about design principles, I still prioritise my own instincts and aesthetic preferences when designing. I use design principles as a guide rather than strict rules. To me, a design should first be something I personally like. Even if it follows all the right principles, it won’t be effective if I don’t connect with it.
What are my aspirations?
I am particularly interested in entertainment design because I enjoy creating characters and stories that carry meaning and can effectively convey important messages. I love the process of creating and using my work to express ideas or perspectives, allowing me to communicate with more people.
At the same time, I also have an interest in UI/UX and graphic design. If given the opportunity, I would love to explore these fields further. Right now, I feel like I am still in the process of learning and don’t have a very clear goal yet. My main hope is that my designs can resonate with people and accurately express what I want to convey. I hope to continue learning, gaining more skills, and creating more works that I truly enjoy.
