Task 2 - Visual Analysis & Ideation

TABLE OF CONTENT

INSTRUCTIONS

For Task 2, we were asked to:

1. Visual Analysis

Write a 300- to 350- word visual analysis of the selected artwork. Refer to the Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide to structure your analysis properly.

Important points from the lectures:

Phase 1 - Observation
  • closely looking at
  • identify visual elements
  • looking, thinking, finding good language to communicate what you notice

Phase 2 - Analysis
  • think about your observations
  • make statements based on the observations
  • how the specific visual elements that you’ve identified combine to create design principles that complete that work of design/art, and the effects on the viewer
  • how are your eyes led through the work and why? Apply the design principles knowledge you have learnt

Phase 3 - Interpretation
  • observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
  • what is the meaning of the design?
  • what was the purpose for it to be created?

2. Ideation

Using your knowledge of design principles, sketch three ideas to improve the selected artwork. Describe each idea and provide a rationale in about 30–50 words. You may include visual references (cite the sources) that inspire your ideas.

VISUAL ANALYSIS

La La Land Official Movie Poster, Summit Entertainment, 2016, Photo Manipulation, Wikipedia

Title: La La Land Official Movie Poster
Artist / Designer: Summit Entertainment (as the specific designer is unknown)
Year: 2016
Size: 2000 x 3000 pixels
Medium of the art: Photo Manipulation

Phase 1 - Observation

The poster for La La Land is in a vertical format. It features two main characters dancing under a streetlamp against a cityscape backdrop. The man wears a white shirt and black trousers, while the woman wears a bright yellow dress. They extend their arms outward as they move together. The streetlamp on the right side emits a soft glow. In the background, a dark mountain range separates the sky from the city, which has scattered lights. The sky transitions from deep blue at the top to a lighter purple near the horizon. The title La La Land is displayed in large, white, uppercase letters at the top in a clean, modern font. The composition places the couple slightly to the left, with the streetlamp positioned further to the right.

Phase 2 - Analysis

The poster uses asymmetrical balance, with the couple on the left and the streetlamp on the right, creating a dynamic composition. Contrast is applied with the woman’s bright yellow dress against the cooler purple and blue background, making her stand out. The man’s neutral black-and-white outfit helps balance the strong colour contrast. The rule of thirds is applied, with the couple and street lamp positioned along key intersections, guiding the viewer’s eye through the scene. Movement is also present in their extended arms and flowing posture, adding a sense of rhythm. The background elements, like the cityscape and mountains, establish depth, creating a layered composition.

Phase 3 - Interpretation

This poster was designed to reflect the film’s themes of romance, dreams, and nostalgia for classic Hollywood musicals. The vintage-inspired visual style, particularly the dancing pose and the use of bold primary colours, recalls old Hollywood movie posters. The sky’s gradient and glowing city evoke a dreamy, magical atmosphere, reinforcing the film’s emotional tone. The contrast between the cool background and the warm yellow dress highlights the female lead, possibly symbolising her passion and vibrance. The use of asymmetry and movement conveys energy, mirroring the film’s themes of ambition and love. These visual choices align with the film’s tribute to traditional musical aesthetics while maintaining a modern, minimalist design.

IDEATION

The original design was already well-balanced in terms of elements, colours, and positioning. However, that also created an issue, as there was a lot of empty space, making the overall design feel somewhat flat. For the improvements, I wanted to explore more dynamic compositions, incorporate new elements, and experiment with different combinations to make the design more engaging while still conveying the original message of the film.

Fig 1.1 Idea #1

I want to use the streetlamp as a framing device because the original poster captures the feeling of a late-night city walk and dance, which reflects the film’s themes. The warm light contrasts with the cool and dark background, making the couple stand out. Partially hiding the title behind the lamp adds depth while keeping it readable (principle of closure).

Fig 1.2 Idea #2

Fig 1.3 Idea #2 Mock up

Fig 1.4 America Latina (2021)

For this idea, I want to make the concept more direct and visually striking. I was inspired by Fig 1.3, and I try to simplify the poster by turning the title into a staircase-like design like a leading line, with the two main characters dancing on it as silhouettes. The background will be a cool-toned sky with warm lighting behind them, creating contrast and depth.

Fig 1.5 Idea #3

I want to create a short animated poster that starts with a wide shot, showing the couple dancing with the city in the background. It then moves to a medium shot, followed by a zoom into a close-up. Finally, the camera tilts upward to the sky, where the title appears. I want to use this smooth transition to create a cinematic feel.

FEEDBACK

Week 3

Specific Feedback
The poster chose is a good case study, can elaborate more rather than work on something that is already refined, there is a lot of room for improvement, can talk about cinematography as well, don't need to just focus on the composition.

Week 4

Specific Feedback
Idea #2 is good, can focus on the font design more as the font in the original poster is not really readable from far. Idea #1 is good as well, the composition is refined, but maybe the shape of lantern is a bit too classic.
