Project 2 - Character Detailing and Texturing

TABLE OF CONTENT

INSTRUCTIONS

For this project, we are to continue with the previous sculpt from Project 1 to further enhancement. We may add sufficient details and textures to the character sculpt by utilising thorough studies of anatomy principles in our sculpt. Details should uplift the character persona which will add visual narrative to the output produced. Below are the list of components to be achieved in this project:
  • Character Persona
  • Skin Details
  • Scars and bumps
  • Creases
  • Color Implementation
  • Light Setup
  • Final Render
*Note: the character needs to be identical to our concept proposed and details that is sufficient to address appealing characteristic. This will then continued to Final Project for further development.

PROCESS WORK

Fig 1.1 Character Sculpt (Week 9, 18/6/2025)

I added more details to the body muscle flow, as shown in Figure 1.1. Then, I did overall landmarking for the outfit (Figure 1.2) and moved on to detailed sculpting for the pants (Figure 1.3). Mr Kannan suggested adding sharper edges to some of the folds to make the pants look more natural, which I plan to refine accordingly.

Fig 1.3 Pants Sculpting (Week 9, 18/6/2025)

I added more details to the face and outfit, as shown in Figure 1.4. Mr Kannan advised continuing to refine the facial features and accessories until they are detailed enough to clearly express the character’s personality.

In Week 11, I enhanced the character sculpt based on Mr Kannan’s suggestions and started adding colours to preview the overall effect.

I was only able to complete the overall sculpt and base colours, as time was running out for this project. Therefore, I decided to leave the final lighting and rendering for the final project submission.

REFLECTION

With the base sculpt in place, this stage was about pushing the details further. I focused on refining surface features like facial definition, folds on the outfit, and accessory elements that could express more of the character’s story.

One of the main challenges was finding the right balance between stylisation and realism—adding enough detail to be convincing, without overworking the sculpt. Honestly, this phase felt more rushed than I expected. I initially planned to refine the sculpt more and explore lighting setups, but I ran out of time. Instead, I focused on adjusting the proportions, improving some surface details, and making the character more presentable overall.

Although I couldn’t dive into lighting or colour blocking like I wanted to, I did manage to tidy up the model and rethink some small design elements. Looking back, I wish I had started polishing earlier—but I also learned how to prioritise what's essential when time is limited.
