Exercise 1 - Audio Dubbing

Fig 2.1.1 Exercise 1 Brief, Week 3

In project 1, we were provided with a short clip of Everything Everywhere All at Once along with subtitles scripts. From the clip, we were instructed to create a Google sheet that includes the scene breakdown with the links to the sound effects and ambience sound according to the timeline.

Audio Breakdown

We were assigned into a group of five to complete the sheet together, and I took part in breaking down the timeline with dialogues.

SFX Editing

I started with placing the SFX audio before adding in the dubbs. A1-A3 are tracks for ambience sound, A4-A7 are tracks for sound effects.

The video below is the initial outcome clip with sound effects and ambience sounds.

Dubbing Process

Below are my recorded dubbing files.  For each script, I recorded multiple versions to see which one fits better. However, for one or two scripts, I wasn't satisfied with the result during editing so I retook them afterwards.

All the dubbed files selected were pretty much in sync with the video, so no speed adjustments were needed.

Fig 2.1.8 Pitch Shifter, Week 3

To make Waymond's voice deeper, I used Pitch Shifter from Audio Effects and decreased the semi-tones. I set the value to -4 for Alpha Waymond and -3 for Original Waymond, as I felt it was necessary to slightly differentiate these two characters to ensure the story flows smoothly and clearly, even though I counted them as one character in the audio track.

Additionally, I recorded and added another dialogue file at 00:27:12 during editing. That part has no subtitle, and was not on our audio breakdown sheet as well, but I felt there should be dubbing to match the scene and the actor's emotion. So I added a short, sharp intake of breath (a small gasp) as Evelyn was frightened.
