2. TUTORIAL & PRACTICAL

Week 6 & 7 - Stop-motion pre-production & shooting

In week 7, we had a stop-motion shooting practice session. we need to replicate the scenes from the existing stop-motion videos. There were 2 videos chosen (original video links available in week 6 brief slides), we were further divided into 2 groups doing both shooting at the same time.

I was in the paper cut team. We did the cutting together before Week 7 shooting class, and after shooting, I arranged the shots in the google drive and shared to my group members for the editing practice in the following week.

In week 9, Mr Martin taught us how to import the shots into Adobe Premiere Pro and AfterEffects for editing.

3. FINAL PROJECT PROCESS WORK

Week 1 Exercise

In week 1, we were instructed to watch and share 3 favourite stop motion shorts.

1. Lost & Found

The movement and facial expressions of both characters are very smooth and detailed, and I appreciate how they convey the story at a comfortable tempo.

2. Good Intentions

I really like the scene design in this stop-motion animation, it feels very authentic. The lighting and atmosphere are just right, and the use of different camera angles is very appropriate, allowing the storyline to be visually conveyed to the audience with great accuracy.

3. Look at Me Only

I was particularly amazed by the smooth transitions in this work. The shift from 3D to 2D at the beginning was my first 'wow' moment, and the subsequent transitions using different materials were also fascinating.

Planning & Proposal

Before starting to do our stop-motion shooting, we were instructed to propose our plan for the final project. I decided to work solo for final project as I already have my own idea on the topic that I wanted to do.

After finalising my storyline with Mr Martin, I started to prepare the paper props needed.

Stop-motion Shooting & Editing

During week 12, I did the stop-motion shooting in the campus studio, and managed to finish 3 scenes. The remaining scenes I decided to do at my place.

After shooting, I arranged the cuts according to the storyline. As the photos were all heic, I converted them to jpeg to make sure them were ready for editing.

Fig 2.6 After Effects working process

I arranged the imported jpeg sequence in Adobe AE, and adjusted the speed of each part.

After finishing the first cut in AE, I switched to Premiere Pro for adding music and sound effects, as I think it's easier and more convenient to adjust the sound in Premiere Pro.

Until here, the stop-motion video was almost done. However, I found that my storyline was a bit too long to fit into a 30s video. After asking Mr Martin, he mentioned that it was okay to try to do 60s stop-motion video, so I tried to readjust the speed.

Fig 2.10 Outro added

After readjusting the speed of the cuts and adding a new outro, I imported the raw video into Premiere Pro for adding sound effects and colour correction.

Fig 2.11 Before and after colour correction and colour grading

I adjusted the colour based on the emotions and feelings in the story, and I tried creating a flashing red light effect at the beginning of the video by adjusting colours.

Fig 2.12 Flashing red light effect

For sound effects, I only added a few for important scenes, and the ending was the part I struggled with the most. I wanted to emphasize the moment when the clock's hand started ticking. Initially, I thought it would be better to have silence and then let the background music (BGM) rise back after the scene, but after testing the idea, it felt a bit strange. So, I adjusted the volume and added transitions for the BGM in this part.
