REFLECTION

Experience

My experience throughout this semester was quite enlightening and positive. It was my first semester, and I am glad that Typography was one of my modules right at the beginning of my journey as a design student, which was a great start. Initially, I expected Typography to involve more artistic expressions, like logo and creative text designs, which offer much more freedom in design. However, it turned out to be quite different from my expectations. Instead of focusing on graphical elements, we dealt more with the text itself, and there was a substantial amount of content in this module, which was very informative yet still manageable. Overall, it was a fun and enriching experience for me, and I am pleased and satisfied with all my works.

Observation

I appreciate how Mr Max conducted the classes and the feedback sessions. It allowed us to compare and learn from each others' works, ensuring everyone was keeping up with the progress. Although all of us working on the same assignments under the same rules and given the same materials, we developed different styles that resulted in unique final works. I truly enjoyed observing and learning from others' works and was genuinely impressed by them. One significant change I noticed in myself after learning this module is that now I would actually pay more attention to anything related to typography, whether it's in magazines, newspapers, logos, etc. Sometimes I even find myself thinking "that's definitely a 'nah' in typography" or "it's a good design but needs better readability", which adds an interesting new perspective to my daily observations.

Findings

Over these 14 weeks, I found that Typography is truly a work that requires a lot of attention and sensitivity. It's often the tiny details that determine whether your design looks harmonious and 'correct' or not. Another significant discovery was how the skills we developed through Typography tasks were proved useful in other areas. When working on poster design assigned by other modules, I found myself automatically applying kerning and tracking to the text content. It feels really good to expand my knowledge across various design aspects, enabling me to be aware and be able to avoid potential mistakes.
